Did You Know? Mark Calcavecchia Nearly Stayed Home...Then Won The Open Championship

Mark Calcavecchia has always brought a laid-back personality and a fearless swing to the game, but his résumé is every bit as impressive as the stories that surround him.

He played at the University of Florida from 1978–1980, earned All-SEC honors in 1979, and won the Furman Invitational before turning professional in 1981.

His first PGA Tour victory came at the 1986 Southwest Golf Classic. Over his career, Calcavecchia collected 13 PGA Tour wins, 4 PGA Tour Champions victories, 193 Top-10 finishes, and 351 Top-25 finishes.

But he almost stayed home from the '89 Open. His first wife was expecting the birth of their first child on the Sunday of the final round. She convinced him to go and he went on to win the Claret Jug. Their daughter would go on to be born 16 days later on August 8th.
